1. Dust Protection Differences

IP54

An IP54-rated LED screen can resist most dust, but tiny particles may still enter the cabinet over time. In dusty outdoor environments, this buildup can collect on PCBs and internal components, reducing heat dissipation and increasing the risk of short circuits. Regular maintenance and cleaning are usually required.

IP65

IP65 is completely dust-tight. No dust can enter the cabinet, making it ideal for harsh environments such as construction sites, desert regions, coastal areas, and industrial zones. The internal components stay cleaner, which helps reduce failure rates and extend service life.

2. Water Protection Differences

IP54

IP54 can handle light rain, splashes, or minor water spray. However, it is not designed for direct exposure to heavy rain or continuous water pressure. If installed outdoors without proper shelter, water ingress may occur during storms.

IP65

IP65 can withstand water jets from a standard 6.3 mm nozzle coming from any direction. This level of protection is considered the minimum requirement for most outdoor LED displays because it can handle heavy rain and routine cleaning with water.

Important Selection Tips

  • Outdoor LED displays should use at least IP65.
    In the LED industry, IP65 is generally considered the minimum standard for permanent outdoor installations. Lower ratings can lead to water damage, failed power supplies, and module issues.
  • IP54 is not a true outdoor solution.
    It is better suited for indoor high-protection applications or semi-outdoor installations with overhead cover.
  • The entire cabinet must be sealed properly.
    A true IP65 LED display requires waterproof protection across the whole system, including cabinet joints, module edges, rear covers, cable connectors, and sealing gaskets. Even one weak point can compromise the entire protection level.
